About the name

To cast a column is to add it up. To rule it off is to draw a single line over the total and a double line under it, so the figure is final and nothing can be slipped in.

An accountant draws a single teal line under a column with a steel rule, beside a dark notebook stamped with the Cast & Rule mark.

The line it gives us

AI does the casting. You do the ruling. The machine does the routine work; the partner signs it off. "Rule" has a second meaning too: rules, limits and control.

The mark

Within · The Courtyard. The Courtyard. A square wall encloses the practice, and a small green piece waits in the gate. Only a partner's decision moves it through. On this site it never moves.

Two looks for the brand. Switch between them with the Appearance control at the top of the page.

Accountants' own words

  • "Cast and cross-cast" is standard wording in ACCA audit exam answers.
  • "Rule off the ledger account" is textbook UK bookkeeping.
  • Most people now learn ruling off in training rather than doing it by hand. That's exactly the work the machine takes on.

Why "X & Y"

It reads like an established firm, the way law and accountancy practices are named, and it's spelled as it sounds. The company and the product share one name, so search and AI answers learn one name.
